Dr. Amazing:
I am a 7th grade student in the central Ohio area. I am working on a science project. I was wondering if you could tell me the top ten methods of memory loss in humans. I think it would add to my report to have a reference from a top physician in this field. Also, I will give the class the internet address so they will look at your web page too.
Thanks a lot.
Lebeno.

Hi, Lebeno
By methods of memory loss, I assume you mean the causes of memory loss of material previously registered in memory. There are not many.
1. Brain disease, such as
Parkinsonism, causes loss of memory.
2. Brain injury can cause loss of memory.
3. Older memories can be displaced by new memories. What you had to
eat last Thursday can be displaced in your mind by what you had to eat on Friday or
Monday.
4. Memories can fade away just by disuse. The more your mind searches
the past, the more memories will remain accessible.
5. Memories can be distorted by the mind, so that the original memory can
become something else, and the mind will believe the latter to be a true memory.
Then there a number of factors which can prevent observed material from being strongly registered into memory.
1. Alcohol, marijuana and other drugs.
2. Stress.
3. Failure to make associations between new material and older remembered
material.
4. Failure to observe with intent to remember.
5. Failure to organize material into categories or classifications.
Good note taking requires a good outline.
6. Failure to repeat material - Repetition.
7. Using only one of your senses instead of multiple senses to register
information or material. Reading aloud is better than silent reading for
remembering.
8. Mental deficiency. Failure to have the mental capacity to
remember in the first place.
9. Interference by other sensory stimuli when one is trying to absorb
information.
10. With aging, a person is slower in registering information into memory.
Although once in memory, it can be available for recall about as good as with a younger
person.
Good luck to you.

I got an A on my report. Thank you soooooo much for helping me out! My teacher thought it was WAY COOL that I looked this stuff up on my own time above what the assignment called for.
Thanks Again

Hi! My name is Heather Fowler. I'm student
of Northcental Techinque
College in Wausau,WI. I'm research for hypnotism. I'm deaf. You are
hynotism. I wonder how it work for deaf person?? It was will work for
deaf person. How we can hear ur voice?? I'm interesting how it work for
deaf person?? Tell me about this. Okay. Umm.. I have question u there
any danger from hypnotism?? And there any benefits?? I wonder who set
up hypnotism in long time?? What they use things of hypnotism?? There
any training?? What they must do training before into hypnotism?? One
thing I want know how work out for deaf people?? I think it was hard for
deaf people cuz we can't hear from u and same time look at light... I'm
curious..Please let me know as soon as possible. Because I've speech for
this class two week later. Thank u very much.. Here my hotmail
address.. Sportgirl35@hotmail.com
Heather:
I have never worked with the hearing impaired. You ask a very good
question. For someone who would read suggestive words without distractions and
who could focus 100% on the written word and who would have a good imagination, I do
believe that it is possible that they could be hypnotized. Of course, it would have to be
a state of high suggestability where the eyes remain open so that the subject could
continue to read suggestive instructions.
If you want a book on how to hypnotize and information about hypnosis, I
believe that my book is the best one on the market. It is now in its fifth
printing. You can order it through my website at www.memorysite.com/books
Basically, there are no dangers from hypnotism unless the subject is in the hands of an
unscrupulous hypnotist. There are a multitude of benefits.
Good luck to you.

Subject: Interview
Hello Dr. Amazing
My name is Vasanth Siva and I am a student at Council Rock High School in
Newtown, PA. I found your webpage in a search on hypnotism. I am doing
a paper on hypnotism and I would like to ask a few questions on hypnosis. If you
have the time, please try and give me brief answers to the following questions:
1.What kind of strange experiences have you encountered while experimenting with hypnosis
on others? -- The most interesting/exciting was when I
regressed people to their early childhood and even into their mother's uterus. I
would disassociate their writing hand from their conscious mind and have them write
descriptions of what they were feeling, etc.
2.Why is hypnosis effective in the field of medicine? --
Because it can replace anesthesia for many operations. Some
people cannot
tolerate anesthesia. In psychotherapy, it allows the patient to relive
repressed memories so that the psychiatrist can deal with those that are the cause of the
patient's distressed mental condition. It can make pill taking easier. It can
reduce anxiety and phobias. It can reduce pain.
3.What kind of problems have you encountered when hypnotizing someone? --
Some people are difficult to hypnotize. When I am on stage,
members of the audience can be disruptive. Some people go so deeply in a trance,
they don't accept suggestions readily. Some people try to fake the hypnotic state.
4.Why is it possible to hypnotize someone to do one thing but not another? --
Much of it depends on the skill of the hypnotist. A
very skilled hypnotist can make a hypnotized subject do just about everything [even though
many people think otherwise].
5.What kind of unsafe practices exist in the field of hypnosis? -- Mostly
by unskilled, untrained hypnotists who try to delve into a person's
psychological past and bring up memories that should not be disturbed. Also, stunts
of trying to make people perform physical feats that they cannot do.
You might want to read my book "Hypnosis Induction
Technics" by Charles
Thomas Co, publisher. You can read about the book at
www.memorysite.com/books
Thank you for your time in answering these questions. Your help is
greatly apppreciated.
Sincerely,
Vasanth Siva
Dear Dr. Amazing:
Thank you very much for the information you've provided me with. It was
extremely valuable in my paper. My paper was a thesis paper defending the
fact that hypnosis is real but not as powerful as it is commonly believed to be.
If you would like a copy of my paper, please let me know and I'll be happy
to send one.
Thanks Again
Vasanth Siva
Hi Dr. Amazing. My name is Andy. I am doing a school project on hypnotists
and what they do. I have heard about you and I want to get some good information
from a real hypnotist. I have only a few simple questions.
1.How long does a hypnotist usually have to go to school?
TO BE A STAGE HYPNOTIST - NO FORMAL TRAINING IS NECESSARY. I LEARNED
FROM A BOOK ON STAGE HYPNOSIS.
TO BE A HYPNOTHERAPIST AND DO PSYCHOLOGIC COUNSELLING VIA HYPNOSIS, IT
WOULD BE ADVISABLE TO TAKE COLLEGE COURSES ON PSYCHOLOGY. I WOULD SUGGEST
GETTING A MASTERS DEGREE IN PSYCHOLOGY AND THEN TAKE SOME COURSES ON
HYPNOSIS.
MANY HYPNOTHERAPISTS HAVE NOT TAKEN PSYCHOLOGY COURSES, AND I QUESTION
WHETHER THEY HAVE THE SKILLS TO DO HYPNOTHERAPY. THERE ARE A NUMBER OF
SCHOOLS THAT TEACH HYPNOSIS. THEY GIVE ALL KINDS OF UNOFFICIAL DEGREES. IF YOU
WOULD LOOK AT THE WEB SITE AT www.memorysite.com/registry
YOU WILL SEE THAT THEY HAVE AN ALPHABET SOUP OF LETTERS TO STAND FOR
DEGREES. I WOULDN'T GIVE ANY OF THEM MUCH VALUE. THE INITIALS JUST LOOK
GOOD.
2.What courses does a hypnotist have to take?
DEPENDS ON THE SCHOOL THAT IS TEACHING HYPNOSIS. THERE ARE NO
EDUCATIONAL GUIDELINES.
3.Where are jobs available for hypnotists?
IF ONE GETS A MASTERS DEGREE IN PSYCHOLOGY AND TAKES TRAINING IN HYPNOSIS,
THEN THAT PERSON MIGHT DEVELOP A PRIVATE PRACTICE IN HYPNOTHERAPY. THE
FIELD OF STAGE HYPNOTISTS IS CROWDED. IN OTHER WORDS, PLANNING ON A CAREER IN
HYPNOSIS IS VERY RISKY, AND I WOULDN'T ADVISE CONSIDERING IT.
4.How much money does the average hypnotist make?
A FEW STAGE HYPNOTISTS WHO HAVE DEVELOPED A FOLLOWING CAN MAKE
GOOD MONEY. FOR MOST, THE REWARDS ARE NOT HIGH BECAUSE THE DEMAND FOR SHOWS IS NOT
GREAT.
5.What does a hypnotist do?
EITHER COUNSELS A PATIENT PSYCHOLOGICALLY IN A PROFESSIONAL
SETTING OR IS A STAGE HYPNOTIST PRESENTING COMEDY SHOWS.
Tell me any other important details about being a hypnotist.
A HYPNOTIST SHOULD HAVE VERY HIGH ETHICS AND MORALS, AS HYPNOTIZED
SUBJECTS ARE TO A CERTAIN EXTENT AT THE MERCY OF THE HYPNOTIST. THE HYPNOTIST MUST
AVOID CAUSING HARM TO THE HYPNOTIZED SUBJECT.
I HAVE ANSWERED OTHER QUESTIONS FROM HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. YOU MIGHT WANT
TO ACCESS THE WEBSITE www.memorysite.com/books
AND CLICK ON "MAIL"
Please answer my questions if you have time. Thank you very much. Email me at Vick849@aol.com . Please email me before Thursday,
my project is due.
GOOD LUCK.
DR. AMAZING
hello, my name is Katie Criss and I am a senior at South
Park High School.
We have begun the dreaded term paper, and my topic of choice is Hypnosis-- Is
it safe and effective?
We are required to have a primary research source. If you would be kind
enough to provide me with a few quick answers to my questions, it would be
greatly appreciated. Thank you!
1. Do you feel that hypnosis is an effective way to control pain? YES
2. Do you practice hypnosis and/or self-hypnosis? I DO STAGE HYPNOSIS FOR
ENTERTAINMENT
3. In your opinion...Is hypnosis safe? YES, AS LONG AS IT IS USED BY AN EXPERIENCED
HYPNOTIST WHO DOES NOT PRACTICE PSYCHOTHERAPY IF HE/SHE HAS NOT BEEN TRAINED IN IT.
4. If you do practice hypnosis, how long have you? SINCE 1953
5. Is their any negative effects of hypnosis? NOT REALLY IF USED PROPERLY.
6. What is your definintion of hypnosis? A DEEP STATE OF SUGGESTABILITY WHERE THE
SUGGESTIONS GO THROUGH THE CONSCIOUS MIND INTO THE SUBCONSCIOUS WITHOUT BEING CRITICALLY
EXAMINED BY THE SUBJECT.
7. Is there a difference in the hypnotic process when hypnotizing children in
comparison to adults? I DON'T THINK SO.
8. Do you prefer hypnosis over pain pills? Would you recomend it? IF YOU CAN AVOID
USE OF NARCOTICS BY USING HYPNOSIS, THAT WOULD BE GOOD.
9. Do you agree with my term paper in saying that hypnosis is a safe and
effective way of providing releif in both the physical and mental aspects? YES.
Dr. Amazing,
Hi! My name is Brett Layton and I live in Alexandria,VA. I have a real
interest in hypnosis and am doing a school project on it. As part of the
project, I am required to interview an expert in the field I am
researching. I am currently in 7th grade in Carl Sandburg Middle
School, and would really appreciate if you could answer some questions
for my interview.
1.) How long have you been a hypnotist?
Since 1953.
2.) What do you most enjoy about being a hypnotist?
Seeing the unforseen things hypnotized subjects do when I am on stage.
3.) What was your most interesting experience?
There have been to many to count.
4.)What field of profession does hypnotism fall under or is it in a
field of its own?
Stage hypnosis - entertainment
Hypnotherapy - psychology and psychiatry.
5.) What strategies do you use to hypnotize someone?
I wrote an entire book on this. You should buy the book.
6.) Does it take a lot of practice to become a good hypnotist? How long
did it take you to become a "good" hypnotist?
Depends on your abilities. I became one after just memorizing one book back
in 1953.
7.) What training if any is required to become a hypnotist?
None for a stage hypnotist.
You should have a basic college training in psychology and related subjects
to become a qualified hypnotherapist.
8.) Can hypnotism be dangerous?
Just like driving a car. In some hands it can be dangerous.>
9.)Are there different levels of hypnotism? If so, what are they?
Light trance state.
Medium trance state.
Deep trance state.
Deepest trance state.
10.) What do you remember if anything after being hypnotized?
Most will remember everything. Depends on the suggestion from the hypnotist.
11.)Can you force a person to do anything against their will?
The usual saying is "no" but that is not true. With the right
hypnotist
and the right subject, the subject can be made to do things he/she would not
do if awake.
12.)How long can you stay in a hypnotic state?
I really don't know. Most people would wake up fairly soon after the
hypnotist stopped suggesting.
13.) Have you ever been under hypnosis yourself? No.
What is it like? Be a subject and find out.
14.) When you hypnotize someone to do something such as quit smoking,
will that person quit smoking forever?
With some people it can be forever. Again, it depends on
skill of the hypnotist and the suggestibility of the subject.
15.) Can you really hypnotize people to do things such as speak
languages they don't even know? No.
I greatly appreciate your help and any consideration you give these
questions.
Sincerely,
Brett Layton

Hello:
Can you please tell me if you know of any stage hypnotists that were sued because of
neglect or malpractice? This would be as a result of the subject not being
awakened when the show was over.
Thank you for your time. Annon.
There is no such thing as a subject not awakening.
If a subject refused to awaken when the hypnotist suggests it at the end of a show, you
only need to leave the subject alone. The subject will then awaken on his/her
own good time.
Further, you can sue anybody for anything, but it would be a waste of time and money in a
case where the subject "slept" on, as there would be no damages. So
even if the hypnotist was so inept that the hypnotist was unable to awaken the subject, a
plaintiff would have an extremely difficult time proving injury. On the other side,
the hypnotist might claim that the subject actually had awakened, but was only acting as
if still hypnotized.
I have no documentation on any hypnotist being sued. I wouldn't doubt that such a
case existed, but it would be more probable that a hypnotist has been sued where a subject
sustained injury when the subject tripped or fell on stage while under hypnosis.
Hi. My name is Nathan Pitkin. I am in 7th grade and I live in Alexandria VA. I wanted to know if someone can hypnotize someone else to like or love them and how you would do it?
YES. WHILE THE PERSON IS IN A TRANCE, HAVE THEM "RELIVE " EVENTS THAT DID NOT ACTUALLY HAPPEN, SUCH AS THE HYPNOTIST HELPING THE PERSON IN MANY WAYS SO THAT A PREVIOUS FICTIOUS RELATIONSHIP DEVELOPS IN THE SUBJECT'S MIND. IN EFFECT - RESHAPING THE SUBJECT'S MEMORY. HAVE THE SUBJECT IN THE TRANCE FEEL VERY GOOD TOWARD THE HYPNOTIST AFTER EACH EVENT AND BUILD UP THAT FEELING UNTIL IT BECOMES LOVE.
I also wanted to know if someone can hypnotize someone to buy them something or do something for them and how you would do that?
IN A SIMILAR WAY, HAVE THE SUBJECT FEEL THAT THE HYPNOTIST SHOULD BE REPAID FOR ALL THE NICE THINGS THE HYPNOTIST DID FOR THE SUBJECT. TELL THE SUBJECT THAT WHEN THE REPAYMENTS ARE MADE, THE SUBJECT WILL FEEL VERY GOOD AND WILL WANT TO DO EVEN MORE FOR THE HYPNOTIST.

Subject: Using Hypnosis for Athletes
I have a question in regards to using hypnosis for athletes. A few years
ago I was in the audience during a show performed by a hypnotist, at the
end of the show the hypnotist said that what the participants had experienced
during his performance would be like receiving 8 hours of sleep.
Is this a true statement? and if so, what actual benefits, if any, could
an athlete receive?
That sleep statement is all hogwash. Many
hypnotists use that or similar
statements, passed on from one to the other, without any scientific evidence
for it.
However, hypnosis can be used to benefit athletes. You can have the athlete
in his/HER mind play and replay himself/herself as if he or she were
actually in the game, improving subconscious skills. You can use it, by
post-hypnotic suggestion, to make him/her focus on the task during the
actual event so that he/she is not distracted. You can use it to guide
his/her course during the pre-game training period, such as to avoid eating
wrong foods or being distracted by other events or people. You can use it by
giving suggestions that the athlete will not develop any anxiety and will be
completely relaxed.
Best.

Say a person is given a posthypnotic suggestion to "cluck like a chicken" when a certain type of music comes on. If awakened, and now back in the audience....When the music comes on.........What exactly happens? THE PERSON CLUCKS IF HE WAS DEEPLY HYPNOTIZED.What is going through their mind when the cue is given? HE HAS AN IRRESISTABLE URGE TO CLUCK.Are they aware they are "clucking like a chicken"? YES,Are they aware of where they are? YES, UNLESS TOLD OTHERWISE.Why do they follow the suggestion? THE COGNITATIVE ASPECTS OF THE CONSCIOUS MIND HAVE BEEN CIRCUMVENTED.If they were embarrased already being on stage and decided they acted silly enough, would they still carry out the suggestion?PROBABLY NOT, SINCE YOU HAVE INDICATED THAT THEY WERE NOT DEEPLY HYPNOTIZED.BEST.DR.
