"NOTHING"

Synopsis

A space ship lands in the mountains of southeast California to acquire information about Earth. They seek a planet where they can resettle many of their people because their planet is used up and dying.  The mother ship sends out a small shuttle craft to explore in a different section but which develops a malfunction and crashes in Nothing, Arizona, a one building, two person community located in the most desolate spot in the state, maybe in the nation.

The four aliens in the shuttle dig their way out of the dirt in which their small ship is buried.  They are smaller than humans, but remarkable similar in looks.  They take control over Gene and Ellen who run the Nothing Store and Garage.  They visit the closest ranch twenty miles away recently purchased by the young newlyweds Mike and Linda Venner, he tall and handsome, she a beautiful young woman who want nothing more than be left alone on their ranch far from everyone.

The aliens take control over these two also because Mike is well educated and can answer some of their questions about American society.   The aliens begin to like human food and two of them fall for Linda's feminine charms.  Although they are forbidden to mate with human women, these two go into the town of Wikieup to the north on several occasions and use their extrasensory powers to have sex with young women sometimes beside their sleeping husbands.

The aliens force Gene and Mike to help dig the shuttle out of the dirt and get it ready to be picked up by the mother ship in a few weeks for the voyage back to their planet.  They nearly kill Gene and Ellen by experimentation and Mike and Linda suspect that the alien who was staying at the ranch had sex with Linda using his extrasensory powers to render the couple asleep while he had his way with her.

Mike and Linda find out, to their horror, that they are to be taken to the aliens' planet as human specimens.  They make several attempts to escape and go the authorities, but are thwarted by the aliens and their extrasensory powers.

Mike is forced to drive to California to pick up four aliens from the mother ship to help repair and extract the shuttle.  He wants to go the the authorities, but Linda is held as hostage back at the ship to keep him in line.

Repairs are going well, but Gene has been able to sabotage the power sources of the shuttle, to cut their power nearly in half.

The day of liftoff comes.  Gene and Ellen are put to sleep in their apartment by the aliens.  Mike and Linda escape and rescue Gene and Ellen, then watch from a low hill the mother ship come in, the shuttle rise only a few feet out of the dirt, and the roasting of the four aliens in the shuttle by the hot gasses, flame, and radiation from the mother ship's power sources which also ignite building and burn it to the ground.  The mother ship, seeing it has failed to pick up the shuttle and barely within the window of opportunity to slingshot the ship on the right course for home, takes off into space.

The four humans who have become close friends go out to the ranch where they will become partners.  They decide they want no part of the publicity that would come their way if they reveal to the authorities and the media the space ship in the dirt with the four corpses.  Mike and Gene borrow a caterpillar from a rancher, cover the space craft with its grizzly cargo of burned corpses, and clean up the site of the burned building.

Mike is thinking he might write a novel about this unbelievable encounter at a much later time.

The mother ship is hurtling through space toward home.  The personnel officer reveals that two of the shuttle crew disobeyed orders and had sex with human women.  "Why didn't you let me know?"

"I tried, but could not get an audience with you before liftoff."

The head engineer comes to the commander and advises him that the ship is millions of miles off course and heading for a meteor field.   The ship is quickly destroyed by meteors and the bits and pieces of the machine and its occupants float in space forever.

On Earth, it comes to light that there was an alien visitation.  Mike an Gene show the media and the Extraterrestrial Society the ship and the bodies.

The four friend's lives will never be the same.   One T.V. reporter tells his audience, "one of the greatest happenings ever has taken place in the remote area of Nothing, Arizona! Folks, you aren't going to believe this!"
